New Renaissance Labs
Technology that makes a new Renaissance possible.
New Renaissance Labs is the bespoke-AI arm of New Renaissance Capital, established in December 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia. We build technology that makes war and poverty obsolete and empowers every future human: personalised, PhD-level education for all, affordable housing, and individual sovereignty. Every project we take on is a step in that mission, and we take on the ones that optimise for leverage, scale and compounding systems.
01 — Mission
Abundance is an engineering problem.
The first Renaissance happened when a small number of people got the tools to think, build and trade at a scale their parents could not imagine. The next one happens when everyone does. We think that is a matter of building the right machines: a teacher that adapts to one student at a time, a company that can be founded and run by one person with the staff of a hundred, housing that costs what it costs to build, and systems that leave the individual in charge of what is theirs.
The harness is the first of those machines we have shipped. It exists because the scarce resource in private equity, and in any small company, is operating bandwidth rather than capital, and because an AI agent without governance is a liability rather than a workforce. Turn an operating playbook into software that runs the same way in every company, with receipts, and the number of companies one person can responsibly own goes up. That is leverage, it scales, and it compounds.
02 — Founder
Ben Tam, founder and Managing Director.
Ben Tam founded New Renaissance Capital and serves as its Managing Director. He holds a B.A. in Political Science, Philosophy and Economics from the University of British Columbia, specialising in game theory, and completed Stanford’s Machine Learning course through Coursera. He works in English, French and Chinese.
He has been a serial founder since 2013, building companies across quant finance, neurotech, ed-tech, biometrics, blockchain, e-commerce and manufacturing. In 2018, before ChatGPT, he built seed-funded, LLM-powered adaptive teaching engines. He founded Western Canada’s largest brain-computer-interface community and has filed two patents: neural-activated audio headphones and an atmospheric self-watering planter.
Since 2014 he has been founder and president of a poverty-alleviation charity, and he runs a community of more than 130 founders and mastermind groups for first-time entrepreneurs. He leads every New Renaissance Labs engagement personally, from Vancouver.
The scarce asset is operating bandwidth across the portfolio, not capital.
03 — How we work
Four principles. Each one is a mechanism in the product, not a poster on the wall.

The brain reasons; the hands act.
A model may draft the plan, but every mutation passes through one audited action registry, and the execution workers that touch the world carry zero AI nodes, a rule the CI enforces on every commit. The same plan produces the same receipts every time it runs.

Tenants are rows, never workflow edits.
A new company is a provisioned workspace with its own mandate, credits, memory and ledger. The twelfth company in a portfolio is set up exactly like the first, and nothing bespoke has to be re-wired for it.

Evidence, or UNVERIFIED.
A memo that states a number it cannot cite is rejected at runtime. Facts in Company Memory carry their provenance, unverified web claims are quarantined, and every report ends with a bibliography. A figure nobody can point to never reaches a board.

Production safety outranks feature speed.
Approval gates on every irreversible act. An append-only audit log and an append-only credit ledger, enforced at the database grant layer. Row-level security on every table. When a model errors, the job fails honestly with the vendor's own message; there are no silent fallbacks.
04 — Our own operating system
The harness runs the company that built it.
New Renaissance Labs is itself a workspace on the New Renaissance Engine, the root workspace the control plane is operated from. Our research desk writes our reports, our memory stack holds what the company knows, and our lead folders, outreach, radar and ledger are the same surfaces we deploy for clients, on the same price sheet. Every count on this website was counted in the codebase or read from the live database, and the governance claims we make are set out, with where each one is enforced, on the trust page.
